Elle magazine

What type of typographic system is being used and what is the designer trying to do with it?

There is a contrasting typographical relationship on the cover to maximize impact. The masthead is in Didot and main cover line about Billie is in serif. The rest of text might be in sans-serif, and so are the rest of the cover lines varying in type size. It creates a visual hierarchy; the Didot and Serif being the most important bits of information that stands out the most.

However I do think that maybe Futura may have been used as the 'm' and 'n' on the body texts are quite sharp and resembles the Futura typeface.

Is there evidence of a grid being used?

I think that there may be some evidence that a grid has been used because the are column involved in the magazine, indents and also with the font partially hidden at the heading. The composition of everything seems balanced and proportioned well.

Is the text justified, range left, range rightor centred? How are paragraphs split up?

The column on the right is aligned right, away from the spine and the masthead of the magazine name 'Elle' is centred.

Do all lines of text align to each other?

The same amount of space from 'women in music' and above it to the top of the page is rather proportional to the distance between the bottom of the page and 'the new edge of seventeen'

What colours are used within the design?

bright accents of green, mostly grey tones and white text.

Do you think this is the correct size? Is it legible?

The text is legible, visually it looks appealing because of the way the text is spread out.

How many typefaces are used and what are they being used to denote? (Find out what they are)

There typefaces that are possibly used are:

- Didot

- sans-serif

- serif

-futura

What size do you think the type is?

The masthead is at a large type size, I think it might be at 48 points. The text size of the word Billie is larger that the rest of the text perhaps at 30 points or so, and her last name 'Eilish' fairly larger the the text above her name could be at 18 points and the same size as 'women in music' across the page on the beginning of the next column.

Is the use of typography suitable for the type of publication that you have chosen why?

I think that it is suitable because its style is sophisticated and reflects the Elle magazine, alongside other fashion magazines that use very similar typefaces. It is minimal and generally looks visually aesthetically pleasing to look at.

What type of paper is the publication printed on?

high end, glossy paper
